Bunnings has recently introduced another range of DIY termite baits alongside the Green Baits which have been stocked for some time. ‘Superway DIY Termite Bait Station – 4 Pack’, ‘Superway Termite Bait Station 12 pack’, and the ‘Superway 500g White Ant Termite Bait’.

The Bunnings Superway Termite Bait Station product.

The Termite Bait Stations themselves are not as critical as the treatment products or termite bait matrix. Termite baits can be easily made from some basic plumbing pipe and a drill, see the following link. https://termicuretermitebaits.com.au/make-termite-baits-free-guide/

To the layperson, these bait stations may seem like a good option for a DIY Termite treatment or management system at home, and while the bait stations do look like a serviceable item (although a little small), it’s the Termite Bait itself is where the largest failure can occur when treating a termite infestation or an active termite bait station.

Termite Management product manufacturers spend millions on research and development of their products. Ensuring that treatment products are effective is paramount, and termite baiting is a very temperamental task if not undertaken correctly, and with the right products. Many of the smaller companies are unable to afford the high cost of quality Reasearch and development of their products, so they simply outsource a recipe for manufacture in China, and hope for the best. Many times, the products simply don’t work.

There are key factors with termite bait materials to ensure they’re effective.
It must be palatable. Termites must want to consume the bait.
It must have the correct amount of active ingredient. While there are tolerances which deems how much active ingredient is mixed in with the bait matrix, these tolerances must be accurate. Too much of the active ingredient (in this case its Chlorfluazuron), the termites will not die out fast enough and the colony will regenerate. Too much of the active ingredient and the termites will die off too fast without being able to transfer the toxins through to the colony. This will prevent colony control from taking place, and the activity will continue.

The Chinese Chlorfluazuron active ingredient

The active ingredient must be of premium quality, with strict anti contamination measures at manufacturing to ensure that the matrix remains pure. Contaminants are the cause of many failed termite baiting attempts.

While the premium termite bait manufacturers such as Sherwood Chemicals (Termatrix) and Corteva (Sentricon Always Active) employ premium facilities and processes to ensure that their products do what they are designed to do, sending a recipe off to the cheapest manufacturer in China does not often encourage quality products.

So when it comes to Termite Baiting, ensure that your products are used and recommended by termite professionals. Our recommendation is only to use products which are used by professionals. The easiest way is to simply google search the product name ie. Termatrix, Sentricon, or Superway. If the product search only shows up on a manufacturer page (or Bunnings at this stage), then it may be wise to keep looking. If you google a product and it shows up on one of the major Termite Industry suppliers websites (Globe, Garrards, Ag Serv) then you are heading in the right direction.

P.S. The reviews for this product on the Bunnings product page may give you your final answer!

Termites are a major problem in Australia with around 20 different species able to chew through timber anywhere in and around your home. So as you can imagine, it pays to know the signs of an infestation before it spreads too far.

Australian subterranean termite species are small, soft-bodied insects that utilise underground tunnels and timber nests to infiltrate thousands of homes across the country. Similar to black ants, termites are attracted to moisture, sweet food sources and rich soils.

Preventing a termite infestation from happening should be high on your list and new home builds are required to have termite barriers installed to pass government regulations, but older houses may not have barriers installed. A DIY (Do it yourself) termicure Termite Bait station could hep you prevent termites completely, plus save you thousands of dollars in the process.

Don’t leave it until it’s too late and termites have moved in. How would you know? Well here are five warning signs you should watch out for both in and around your home.

1. Mud ‘tubes’

As Australia’s most common termites are subterranean, they require special shelter for protection once they emerge from the ground. Common termite mud tunnels look like miniature tubes, and are often made of dirt or termite droppings. Though it can be difficult to spot these mud tubes, they are one of the most common warning signs of a termite infestation – and enable these critters to travel across exposed terrain to infiltrate your home.

Unfortunately, if mud tunnels are spotted in or on your home, it’s probably too late to proactively combat termites and you will need to get a full inspection of your home. However, avoiding build-ups of moist soil, timber (any kind of wood) or dirt around the perimeter of your house is one way to prevent the frequency of termite travel across your property.

2. Power at your house repeatedly short circuits

Termites are often attracted to the warmth of electrical fittings behind walls – so if you notice that short circuits are a regular occurrence at your place, they may be the reason. A good way to confirm this is by inspecting your electrical fittings and power points. If you spot a build-up of earthy materials such as damp mud or soil, you may have a termite problem.

Attempting to fix these impacted power points yourself is extremely hazardous, so it’s best to contact a professional electrician to clean up the area and fix this for you.

3. Noticeable floor or ceiling damage

Though they mostly eat wood, termites can feed on anything that crosses their path – and though they are small, they can enforce massive amounts of damage to the structural integrity of items such as laminated floors, skirting boards and ceiling beams.

If you spot noticeable blisters, cracks or sags on any of these surfaces, there’s a high possibility that termites are present. Another way to detect termite damage is to knock on timber around your house. If it sounds hollow, it is likely termites have eaten away at it.

4. Swarms of flying insects outdoors

Australia is home to many species of flying insects – but if you spot swarms of white, winged pests during spring and summer, your home may be a nesting place for alates, or ‘flying termites’. These swarms are a strong indication that termite colonies are present in or around your house.

Alates reproduce in rotting tree stumps or large piles of wood, so it’s a good idea to clear any excess wood from around your house to prevent them from nesting on your property.

5. Cracked paint or plaster on walls

Termite damage to walls often resembles minor water damage, but is quite a serious and complicated issue to fix. This damage often gives the wall paint a ‘bubbling’ or ‘honeycombing’ effect, and is a result of termites eating away at timber in the internal walls, affecting the walls’ structural integrity, and causing cracks in the paint or plaster.

Have you seen flying termites, or are they flying ants? How can you tell the difference between flying ants and flying termites, and should you be concerned?

These higher humidity levels we have been experiencing over the last few weeks have seen the first major termite colonisation in multiple areas around most of Australia so expect to see more flying termites around the place (technically referred to as Alates).

Insects thrive in high humidity, which is why you’ll start to find more bothersome insect pests around as we lead into summer. Ants are a consistent menace, which can appear at any time of the year, but if you are seeing large amounts of flying ants around you home, it’s likely that an active termite colony is close by.

How can you tell the difference between a flying ant and flying termite?

While both flying termites and ants have four wings, termites have two large pairs of wings which are the same size. Winged ants have noticeably larger wings in the front than the pair in the back.

Termite wings are twice as long as their body. Ant wings are shorter and more proportionate to their bodies.

Termite antennae are more evenly curved, where ant antennae are kinked.

Ants appear distinctly segmented, because of their thin waist. Termites have a broad waist and are mostly a uniform width along their entire body.

Flying termites are often a dark honey colour, although this can be difficult to determine as the melanin in different termite species and environments is variable.

The main thing is, if you have concerns, it’s easier and less expensive to prevent a termite issue, than it is to have the heartache and expense of repairing termite damage.

Termite professionals don’t use DIY Termite bait kits, because the quality required for successful termite eradication and protection is usually not available in products sold to the homeowner.

Most of the commercially available termite products are sold through specialised distributors, who purchase their products directly from the chemical companies. Dow, Ensystex, Sherwood Chemicals, and Bayer, are all product manufacturers who have spent Millions of dollars on product research and testing, to ensure that they are at a high standard which is required by professionals. Price of products certainly comes into play, but where termites are concerned, most Termite professionals won’t risk using a cheap ‘No Name’ termite bait.

Pest professionals pay a fortune each year in insurance to protect themselves from being sued for failed termite issues, so using proven termite eradication products in the field is essential.

Now, while you are researching DIY Termite Bait Kits, look into the actual termite bait which is to be used to kill termites. All will profess to ‘kill the colony’, or ‘kill the queen’, or ‘nest’, which is the ultimate goal with any termite baiting.

Most bait stations will be functional, and serve the purpose of aggregating termites to them for treatment, but the bait MUST be a quality product. Termites can be extremely temperamental and most times, a cheap bait matrix will simply not be consumed, causing termites to abandon the station, effectively causing termites to feed elsewhere, possibly on your home…

This, is why Termicure only supplies termite bait products which are sold exclusively for professional use, although we have packaged our products so that they can be easily used by the handy homeowner. The Sentricon ‘Always Active’ Rods are the biggest revolution in Termite bait protection by combining the attractant AND the ‘poison’ in a specially made rod.

For active termite treatments, we’ve utilised the ‘Termatrix’ Termite bait matrix, and packaged it with specially developed treatment pouches, so that the homeowner can successfully bait and eradicate active termites, simply and easily from their home.

These items are both exceptional products sold exclusively to termite professionals and used successfully every day to protect and eradicate termites from property. If you want to know the quality of any DIY termite bait kit product, then simply google them. If they don’t show up on the 3 major Pst Industry distributor websites, then you need to keep looking. The 3 major professional pest industry suppliers are Globe Australia, Garrards and AgServe.

So, before you go ahead and purchase any DIY termite bait kit to protect your home or eradicate termites from it, just do some simple research.

Our Termite bait kits are professional products, developed for successful use by the homeowner.
You may have come across the term ‘Kill termites without poison’ if you’ve been looking on the internet for information on how to get rid of termites. There are two commonly used methods of treating active termites, one is with a chemical formulation (poison), and the other is with a bait matrix, which is considered no toxic to humans or domestic animals.

The bait matrix option is a product which can be mixed and applied to areas where termites are feeding. The bait matrix contains an ‘insect growth regulator’, which methodically kills off attacking termites. The insect growth regulator is not considered a poison because it causes no harmful effects to humans or domestic pets, yet is deadly to termites because, for lack of a better explanation, they become addicted to the product. The insect growth regulator in the bait matrix prevents the termites from moulting, systematically killing the nest.

This is how professionals kill termites without poison, which is why it can be suitable for use by the homeowner. The insect growth regulator (chlorfluazuron, hexaflumuron are both different types of insect growth regulators) is mixed into a palatable powder, which is mixed by the user into a paste and applied to live termites. The process can be tricky as there are different products of varying quality, and all have different mixing instructions to get the matrix just right.

Being a huge advocate for DIY termite treatments under the right conditions, Termicure has now adapted a professional bait matrix delivery kit so that you the homeowner can kill termites without poison, and without harm to family or pets.

Our live termite treatment kits include professional Termite Bait Matrix packs, combined with a specifically developed live termite treatment pouch which allows the homeowner to mix and apply the product in a simple and effective method.

Simply take one of our 100gram professional termite bait matrix packs, and empty it into our treatment pouch. Add 350ml of water and apply the pouch to the termite activity using the adhesive provided. The termites will feed on the bait within the pouch, and transfer the product through the colony without the need for poisons.

There are multiple other products available on the internet, by so called high quality DIY suppliers, but in most cases, these products are cheaply manufactured copies of good products, which simply don’t work. We ONLY supply high quality PROFESSIONAL termite products which are proven by the industry. We’ve developed a system for our clients to kill termites without poison, so that homeowners can have access to products which work.

As well as proven professional products, we will provide you with full support on how to manage your treatment, so that you can kill termites without poison, and without paying a fortune.

Live termites are found in all sorts of places, but the one place you don’t want to find them, is in your home.

If you find live termites in your house, then you should have the situation inspected by a professional to locate any other areas where activity might be happening. Then a form of treatment should be applied to get the attack under control.

Live Termites can be treated with two main methods:

1. Termite Treatment

This is with the application of a termiticide in the form of a liquid, a foam or a dust. This method is commonly used by professional termite managers because it has a quick result. Termites almost immediately abandon a treated area, and it provides a seemingly faster solution for the homeowner as the activity seems to have been eradicated.

2. Termite Baiting

The second mainstream method of termite eradication is through live termite baiting. This involves the mixture and application of a bait matrix to active termites. The live termites feed on the bait, and become dependent on it, transferring the toxins throughout the entire colony over a matter of weeks or months. This process is a lot slower than the chemical treatment, but it comes with better certainty, as the colony destruction can be observed through different stages.

The application of a bait matrix to live termites is a far safer method of termite eradication. Bait matrix materials are non toxic to humans or domestic animals, but they are deadly to termite colonies.

During the process of baiting, the various different termite family members become more and more effected by the bait, and the ‘worker termites’ begin to die off faster than the ‘soldier termites.

In this picture above, the ‘worker’ termite can be seen in between the other two darker soldier termites. All the same species (schedorhinotermes sp.), the major soldier can be seen on the right, and the minor soldier can be seen on the left. The ‘minor’ soldiers indicate the presence of a well established colony, as they, and the major soldier protect the worker from predators. The worker termite is responsible for the gathering of food and distribution of that food through the termite colony.

When the bait matrix starts to take effect, the worker termites are the first to reduce in numbers, as they are the first of the colony to ingest the bait. As they die out, the soldier termites begin to starve, but they are the ones left behind and an accumulation of soldiers is a good indication that a termite colony is almost at the point of destruction as the remaining soldiers continue to wait for their worker mates.

Once the remaining soldiers die off, then it is presumed that the colony is dead. All that will be left in the feeding station will be some un consumed bait and bunch of dead termites, which should be predominantly soldiers.

The species pictured above are notoriously temperamental, and can take a long period of time to eradicate. They are aggressive though, so baiting these guys and ensuring colony elimination is key.

There are multiple live termite treatment kits on the market, directed at the DIY segment, but are they any good?

Well most DIY Termite treatment kits consist of a generic Termite Bait Matrix which has been cheaply produced and sold without any real testing. The cheaper, the better is what most retailers will say, as they’re margins for profit are higher, and most homeowners don’t know enough about the process to tell whether they are killing their termites, or just feeding them.

In most homeowners minds, a termite bait kit contains all of the ingredients to simply install into the ground around their home. Install the stations, place the ingredients into the stations and then just wait for the termites to attack the timber inserts and check it every now and then to make sure they are keeping on top of things. NOT TRUE! There is nothing to kill termites! These systems if not professionally baited, with specific products, then you’re just going to attract termites to a food source which has been placed extremely close to your house. You might as well send out an invitation to attacking termites!

This DIY Termite baiting attempt resulted in the attacking termites consuming the timbers in the baits, then moving into the house before the homeowner even knew the station was active.
With simple modification, this Nemisis system could have been retrofitted with the Termiticide Rods to prevent system neglect and failure.

If you don’t know much about termite baits, or the various DIY termite bait kits on the market, then you’ll realise that most DIY termite bait kits are just timber. There is no poison, no pre mixed bait matrix to kill the colony integrated into the stations. In many terms, the DIY termite bait industry is bordering on a scam…

Enter Termicure and the Sentricon ‘Always Active’ Termiticide Rods. The ‘Always Active’ Rods, replace the timber as the product which attracts the termites. Being ‘laced’ with an insect growth regulator called Hexaflumuron, the Always Active Rods have revolutionised termite baiting. These Termiticide Rods are designed to kill attacking termite colonies as they feed on them. The termites become unable to feed on other products and become dependent on the food source that’s going to kill off the nest.

Termicure Sentricon Always Active refills

Currently, the Sentricon Rods are only available from commercial Pest Control Suppliers and their sale is restricted to termite professionals. Being such a simple procedure to successfully protect property, we developed our packs which include these rods, and we supply them directly to the homeowner. Basically, these are a pre packaged professional termite bait kits which can be easily used and successfully installed to kill termites as they make their way around your property.

termite traps diy

The process is simple. Just install your Termicure termite bait stations, and drop the rods in. One rod in each station, and clip the lid into place. Now its a matter of just checking the stations about every 8 weeks. The rods will last up to (likely in excess of) 5 years unless depleted by termites.

Thousands of Australian homes have unused or unserviceable termite baits around their home. Whether you had a baiting system installed, or you bought a house with an existing termite bait system, then it’s a simple process to purchase a termite bait upgrade kit and get it up and running again.

All of the professional grade termite baits are large enough to hold the revolutionary Sentricon ‘Always Active’ rods, which have replaced the timber inserts in old school bait stations.

The Sentricon Rods, take over the role of the timber by attracting termites to the station, and they are also laced with an insect growth regulator, to destroy the attacking colony. It’s the new way of termite baiting, and here is some information on why it’s the leadeing termite bait product.

So, take a look at your termite baits…. If they have Exterra, Termatrix, Sentricon, or Termicure printed on the lid, than you can easily upgrade the system to an all in on, single step attract and kill termite bait system.

We sell the Termicure ‘Active’ Bait refill Packs, which contain 6 Sentricon Rods, which can be installed into any of the above systems and more.

diy sentricon termite baiting

The main benefit of purchasing your termite bait upgrade kit is to take your old termite bait system from being a laborious, and often unsuccessful termite attractant, and turn it into a self managing termite killing machine.

With your old termite baiting system having been upgraded, it’s much easier to manage the termite baits yourself. There is less monitoring of the termite bait stations than with the old school systems. Even if you don’t check your stations at all, (we don’t recommend this!!), you can still be successful in killing off multiple termite colonies on your property. With the old school timber attractant systems, you’re not going to kill anything if you forget to them them…You’re just going to invite termites to feed at your home.

Once you’ve renewed your existing termite bait system, managing your termite protection become easy. Sentricon recommends checking your stations every 3 months for high risk localities, and if more than 50% of a rod has been consumed by termites, then it should be replaced. With the Termicure Termite Bait Stations, they are large enough to leave the part consumed rod in place, and simply add another rod to prevent any unnecessary disturbance of the feeding termites.

If you have broken stations or missing lids, then you can simply purchase the Termicure ‘Active’ Bait packs to replace your damaged stations. They are pack of 4 stations including the Sentricon Rods. It doesn’t matter that not all of your stations are the same, as long as they all are stocked with the Sentricon Rods.

Believe it or not, there are some products available which can be effective for the homeowner to protect their property from termites. In the past, this depends on how skilled and patient an individual homeowner is, and how willing they are to search for the correct information on how things are to be done.

‘Old School’ termite baits are a very basic concept. Install termite bait stations around a structure, fill them with tasty termite ‘treats’ (timber, cardboard etc.) and wait…

Eventually, foraging termites will attack the timber and then during regular station checks, activity may be detected, which is then actioned with a program of mixing and adding a termite bait matrix to the active station, feeding them with another tasty product, secretly packed with toxins to destroy the attacking termite colony.

These kits are commonly available online now, at what seem to be insanely cheap pricing. There’s a DIY Termite Protection kit marketed to the homeowner, and endorsed by one of Australia’s leading termite entomologists which claims that they are so simple, anyone can do it. There’s a green DIY Termite Protection kit which is sold at Bunnings which provides virtually no opportunity for bait application, there’s a ‘Mansion’ DIY termite protection kit, and then there’s a ‘Gold’ DIY termite protection kit which is a new one to the market to flood the wary homeowner with another average quality product doomed to fail the homeowner.

While each of these products can work, they are basically a more complex version of a professional ‘Old School’ diy termite protection kit. One of the biggest problems with these products is not the stations, or the attractant products (timber, cardboard), it’s the cheap bait matrix sold which actually does the eradication.

Often, these DIY companies race off to china and have a bait product manufactured which is simply ineffective. Major professional manufacturers spend millions on R & D of bait products to get them right, and these smaller DIY companies, simply don’t have the budget, but they sell a useless ‘copy’ in order to make a dollar.

This is where the Termicure ‘Active’ Packs come into their own.

termite traps diy

The Termicure ‘Active’ Packs are a conventional style termite bait station, combined with the revolutionary Sentricon ‘Always Active’ Termiticide Rods. These termiticide rods replace the typical ‘tasty termite treats’ such as timber and corrugated cardboard. Not only are these rods more palatable (tasty) to termites, but they contain the poison required to kill the entire colony, once termites attack the rod.

Sentricon has produced Professional (not amateur) termite products since the 80’s and is a large Multinational company backed with huge credibility in pest management and agriculture.

The Termiticide Rods have changed the way termite baiting is done in Australia, and it means that once your termite baits are installed, it’s beginning to protect your property immediately.

Commercially, the Sentricon ‘Always Active’ product is only available to registered termite professionals, so homeowner use has been virtually nil until now.

Termicure ‘Active’ Packs contain the solution to the DIY Termite Baiting Scam with Sentricon ‘Always Active’ Rods

We identified the simplicity in the process of not having to manually feed active termite bait stations in order to kill off a termite colony, which makes sense for the non professional to be successful in protecting their own property.

The termiticide rods included in our DIY termite protection kit reduces the failure of termite baiting by up to about 90%. There is no mixing of messy bait matrix, there’s is a hugely reduced risk of contamination of the bait, the bait is a professional and proven product with extensive research and success, and it’s simple.

Active Termite Bait Rods Australia

Art this point in time, Termicure ‘Active’ Bait packs are the only DIY termite bait kits which have been fully adapted for the homeowner to use which include the Sentricon Rods.

We provide full support via phone and email by experienced and knowledgable termite professionals to ensure you’re doing things right.

termite baiting system diy

So, if you want to successfully bait and kill termites around your home, then do some google research on the Sentricon ‘Always Active’ system.

Don’t believe everything you read on a website where they are trying to sell you a product for the purpose of profit. Check around, and see what professionals say about the Sentricon system, and then come back to us.

DIY termite protection kits can save you thousands if you get the right product, but they’ll be a waste of money if you get the wrong ones too.
